In the past, people wore the same exact shoes for both left and right feet.

Before the nineteenth century, men and women wore identical shoes, identical not just in the sense that the same shoes were made for men and women but in that the shoe used for the right foot is identical to the one used for the left foot. It was only in 1818 that shoes specifically for right and left feet were designed.
