Five Quick Facts:

  • When he was young, Columbus made and sold maps for a living.
  • Several records show that Columbus was not the first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Many historians believe that the first person who did that was the Norse Viking Leif Eriksson.
  • Columbus did not set sail to prove the earth was round. Most educated people in 1492 already knew that the earth was not flat.
  • Columbus was not totally honest with his crew during the voyage. Sometimes he would purposely manipulate the ships’ travel records so his crew would not notice the length of their travels.
  • Columbus’ flagship, the Santa Maria, had fifty-two men aboard, while the Niña and Pinta were staffed by just eighteen men each.
