Some brides cry during their weddings but among the Tuija people of central China, the bride cries one hour a day a month before her wedding. Ten days later, she is joined by her mother then ten days after, by her grandmother, aunts and sisters. They do not simply sob but weep in different tones as if they are singing. The reason? In order to cast all sorrow aside and prepare for a happy future.
