In Ancient Greece, throwing an apple at someone was a marriage proposal.

This comes from the Greek myth wherein Eris, the goddess of mischief, threw a golden apple in the middle of the wedding banquet, saying that it was for the most beautiful goddess of all, a title which Hera, Athena and Aphrodite all wanted.
