The blue-tongued skink is a native Australian lizard, growing up to 23.5 inches (60 centimeters) long. Its special feature, as the name suggests, is its bright blue tongue. When threatened, this skink puffs up its body to appear bigger, and then sticks out its long tongue with a hiss. This usually takes the predator by surprise, giving the skink just enough time to scurry away.

They have smooth bodies with overlapping scales. Their tails are short and thick, and can store fat. The tail also breaks off if grabbed by a predator, and later it partially grows back.

Blue-tongued skinks are omnivorous. Their diet consists of insects, snakes, worms, fruit and flowers, and their jaws are strong enough to break the shells of snails and beetles.
