The first person to earn a Computer Science PhD in the United States was a Catholic nun.

Mary Kenneth Keller took her vows with the Sisters of Charity in 1940 and studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning her Computer Science PhD in 1965. She also helped develop the BASIC computer language while studying at Dartmouth College.
