It bears a slight resemblance to the red fox even though it is in an entirely different genus. It has a mane (hence its name), which stands erect when the wolf feels threatened. The maned wolf has tall legs, probably an adaptation to the tall grasslands of its habitat. The wolf inhabits open habitats in swampy areas, low-scrub forest edges and tall grasslands.

To communicate the maned wolves use urine. They spray urine to mark their hunting spots or places where they have buried prey. Their urine has a very distinctive odor.

It hunts during the dark hours and rests during the day often in thick bush covered areas. It bites the prey on their neck or back to kill it and sometimes also vigorously shakes it. It is an omnivore and eats fruits, small mammals, birds, deer, reptile, insects and fish. One of its most important sources of food is the lobeira fruit. It is believed that the fruit has medicinal qualities which help against the giant kidney worm.
